The Big Tech Accountability Act has been introduced in Congress.
Free Speech For People has launched a campaign to demand action and has crafted model federal legislation, the Big Tech Accountability Act, to hold social media companies accountable; to protect internet users, voters, and the broader community from the dangers of rampant amplification of disinformation and violence; and to protect personal privacy and autonomy online.
On September 4th, 2026, Congressman Jim McGovern of Massachusetts introduced The Big Tech Accountability Act in the US House of Representatives.
The bill would eliminate the current blanket immunity for internet companies and would create new federal civil and criminal liability for internet companies that amplify disinformation and threats of violence; ban targeted advertising on the internet; and require the Federal Trade Commission to recommend rules banning the collection and sale of personal data without genuine, informed consent.
